Bunratty Castle & Folk Park
A Fortress with a Story
Bunratty Castle, built in 1425, is one of the most complete and authentically restored medieval castles in Ireland. Located near the Shannon Estuary, this imposing tower house was once a stronghold of the powerful O’Brien clan. Today, it offers visitors a vivid glimpse into Ireland’s medieval past — complete with banquets, tapestries, and battlements.
The castle is fully furnished with 15th- and 16th-century artifacts and open for exploration. You can climb its narrow stone staircases to the Great Hall, stand where lords once held court, and enjoy sweeping views from the ramparts.
What to See and Do
Surrounding the castle is the 26-acre Bunratty Folk Park — a charming open-air museum with over 30 reconstructed buildings. From a working blacksmith and schoolhouse to thatched cottages and a traditional pub, the park recreates 19th-century village life in rural Ireland.
One of the highlights is the evening medieval banquet held inside the castle, where you’ll dine on traditional fare while being serenaded by costumed performers — a true immersive experience.
Families will enjoy the fairy trail, petting farm, and walled gardens. Seasonal events and reenactments add even more life to this dynamic heritage site.
Fun Fact
The name “Bunratty” comes from “Bun Raite,” meaning the mouth of the Ratty River, which flows beside the castle.
