Dursey Island
Dursey Island
Isolation, Nature, and Quiet Magic
Dursey Island sits off the Beara Peninsula in West Cork and offers visitors a peaceful retreat. With no shops, pubs, or restaurants, the island is all about untamed beauty, sweeping views, and a deep sense of solitude.
Getting there is half the fun: Ireland’s only cable car travels 250 metres over the ocean — and yes, it’s also used to transport sheep!
What to See and Do
Dursey is best explored on foot. A well-marked trail leads from the cable car landing across the island’s ridge, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic, Skelligs, and nearby headlands. Along the way, spot ruins, holy wells, seabirds, and perhaps a curious fox or goat.
The walk is about 14 km round-trip, so bring sturdy shoes, water, and snacks. You won’t find a café here — and that’s part of the appeal.
Fun Fact
Dursey’s cable car is the only one in Europe that crosses open seawater.
