Ballyhack Castle

Perched above the waters of Waterford Harbour, Ballyhack Castle is a striking 15th-century tower house built for defense and control. This hidden gem in County Wexford is perfect for history lovers seeking an off-the-beaten-path Irish experience.

A Fortress of the Knights Hospitaller

Ballyhack Castle was built around 1450 by the Knights Hospitaller of St. John, a religious military order known for protecting pilgrims during the Crusades. The castle was part of a network of strongholds that monitored the strategic river crossing between Passage East and Ballyhack, vital for trade and military movement.

The thick limestone walls, murder holes, and narrow spiral staircase reflect the building’s defensive purpose, while the castle’s lofty position offered sweeping views of the estuary—perfect for spotting incoming ships.

What to See

The Tower House

The five-storey tower has been remarkably preserved and restored. Visitors can climb the original spiral staircase and explore the various chambers that once served as storerooms, sleeping quarters, and a chapel.

Medieval Features

Keep an eye out for authentic medieval details like the murder hole over the entrance, used to pour boiling oil or stones on intruders. The rounded corners of the tower helped deflect attacks, while arrow slits provided both light and defense.

Exhibits

Inside, displays cover the story of the Knights Hospitaller, the castle’s role in local history, and life in medieval Ireland. Some rooms include furnished recreations of 15th-century interiors, helping bring the past to life.
