Book of Kells & Trinity College
A Sacred Masterpiece in a Storied Hall
The Book of Kells is one of the world’s most famous illuminated manuscripts — a 9th-century masterpiece of early Christian art. Housed in the Old Library of Trinity College Dublin, it draws visitors from across the globe for its intricate beauty and spiritual significance.
Trinity College itself is Ireland’s oldest university, founded in 1592. The Long Room of the Old Library, lined with dark oak and filled with ancient texts, is one of Dublin’s most iconic sights.
What to See and Do
Begin at the visitor centre where you’ll learn how the Book of Kells was made by monks on remote Iona and later Kells. Continue into the Long Room — nearly 65 metres long and home to 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.
Don’t miss the Brian Boru harp (Ireland’s oldest), and the Proclamation of the Irish Republic — all displayed in this spectacular setting.
Fun Fact
The Long Room inspired the Jedi Archives in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones — though Lucasfilm later denied “official” links.
