Casino Marino: Dublin’s Hidden Neoclassical Gem
Just north of Dublin’s city centre lies Casino Marino, a petite architectural masterpiece that surprises at every turn. Though modest in size, this 18th-century “little house” is a treasure trove of design and history, waiting to enchant curious travellers.
A Grand Tour’s Legacy
The Vision of an Earl
James Caulfeild, the 1st Earl of Charlemont, returned from a nine-year Grand Tour of Europe brimming with inspiration. Eager to bring a slice of classical elegance to Ireland, he commissioned renowned architect Sir William Chambers to design a pleasure house on his estate. The result? Casino Marino, completed around 1775, stands as one of Europe’s finest examples of neoclassical architecture.
A Masterpiece in Miniature
Despite its compact exterior, the Casino houses 16 intricately decorated rooms across three floors. Its design is full of clever illusions: hollow columns that drain rainwater, disguised chimneys, and windows that appear singular but serve multiple rooms.
Inside the Casino
The Zodiac Room
One of the standout spaces is the Zodiac Room, featuring a domed ceiling adorned with astrological symbols, reflecting the 18th-century fascination with the cosmos.
The Blue Salon
Another highlight is the Blue Salon, boasting a parquet floor with a Star of David motif, intricate stucco ceilings, and a white marble fireplace, showcasing the era's exquisite craftsmanship.
