Maynooth Castle was established in the early 13th century as the stronghold of the Fitzgerald family, one of the most influential dynasties in Irish history. Known as the Earls of Kildare, the Fitzgeralds ruled vast territories and were often considered the uncrowned kings of Ireland. Thomas Fitzgerald, also known as “Silken Thomas” for the fine silken fringes worn by his followers, launched a bold rebellion against English rule. His cause ultimately failed, and the castle fell to English forces after a brutal siege. Silken Thomas was captured and executed in London—ending the Fitzgeralds’ grip on Maynooth.
Though the castle never fully recovered its former glory, the great keep still stands as a powerful symbol of the era’s grandeur and upheaval.
