Maynooth Castle

Right in the heart of County Kildare, Maynooth Castle stands as a proud reminder of Ireland’s medieval might—and the dramatic tales of power and rebellion that echo through its ancient stones.

A Castle Built for Power

Maynooth Castle was established in the early 13th century as the stronghold of the Fitzgerald family, one of the most influential dynasties in Irish history. Known as the Earls of Kildare, the Fitzgeralds ruled vast territories and were often considered the uncrowned kings of Ireland. Their motto, “More Irish than the Irish themselves,” hints at just how entwined they were with the island’s fate.

The castle’s original keep was a formidable structure, designed not only for defense but to impress. And it did—Maynooth became one of the most important political centres outside Dublin for several centuries.

A Rebellion That Changed Everything

In 1534, the castle found itself at the heart of a dramatic turning point in Irish history. Thomas Fitzgerald, also known as “Silken Thomas” for the fine silken fringes worn by his followers, launched a bold rebellion against English rule. His cause ultimately failed, and the castle fell to English forces after a brutal siege. Silken Thomas was captured and executed in London—ending the Fitzgeralds’ grip on Maynooth.

Though the castle never fully recovered its former glory, the great keep still stands as a powerful symbol of the era’s grandeur and upheaval.

What to Explore

Today, visitors can walk through the atmospheric ruins and explore the recently restored keep. Inside, you’ll find fascinating exhibits about the castle’s architecture, the Fitzgerald dynasty, and the political intrigue of medieval Ireland.

The site is well interpreted, with helpful signage and staff who are genuinely passionate about sharing the stories that shaped this place. The contrast between the rugged medieval walls and the modern display panels makes for an engaging experience.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

Maynooth Castle is just a short walk from the train station and close to the town’s lively centre, making it a great stop on a day trip from Dublin. Admission is free, and guided tours are available during the summer months—perfect if you want to dive a bit deeper into the history.

Wear sturdy shoes, especially if you’re planning to climb up any of the stone steps, and take your time wandering around. There’s a quiet, contemplative feel to the grounds, and it’s worth slowing down to soak it all in.

Tip

While you're in Maynooth, grab a coffee and stroll through the nearby Carton Avenue—an old tree-lined carriageway that once led to the grand Carton House estate. It's a lovely walk, and a great way to round off a visit to one of Ireland’s most storied castles.
