Gap of Dunloe

Gap of Dunloe

Tucked between the rugged peaks of County Kerry, the Gap of Dunloe is a breathtaking glacial valley that offers visitors a step back into Ireland's ancient landscape. This narrow mountain pass, carved during the last Ice Age, is a must-see for nature lovers, hikers, and anyone seeking the soul of the Irish countryside.

Exploring the Gap

Geography & Scenery

The Gap stretches 11 km from Kate Kearney’s Cottage in the north to Lord Brandon’s Cottage in the south, rising to an elevation of 241 meters at its highest point. It separates two prominent mountain ranges: the MacGillycuddy's Reeks to the west and the Purple Mountain Group to the east. Along the route, you'll encounter five serene lakes—Coosaun Lough, Black Lake, Cushnavally Lake, Auger Lake, and Black Lough—linked by the River Loe.

The Wishing Bridge

Between Coosaun Lough and Black Lake lies the Wishing Bridge, a charming stone crossing steeped in local legend. It's said that wishes made here are destined to come true, making it a popular stop for hopeful travelers.

Activities & Adventures

Walking & Hiking

A walk through the Gap is a journey through some of Ireland's most stunning scenery. The 6 km path from Kate Kearney’s Cottage to the Head of the Gap takes about an hour each way, offering views of glacial valleys, heather-covered slopes, and tranquil lakes. For more ambitious hikers, routes extend into the surrounding mountains, including the Purple Mountain Loop.

Rock Climbing

The Gap is also a hidden gem for rock climbers, boasting over 100 routes on Old Red Sandstone cliffs. Areas like Brennan's Leap and Jigsaw Wall offer climbs ranging from beginner to expert levels, with some routes reaching up to 40 meters in height.

Getting There & Around

The Gap is accessible via a public road maintained by Kerry County Council. While the road is open to vehicles, it's narrow and winding, making it more suitable for walking, cycling, or traditional horse-drawn jaunting cars. Starting from Kate Kearney’s Cottage, visitors can embark on a scenic journey through the pass, ending at Lord Brandon’s Cottage in the Black Valley.

Travel Tips

  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and autumn offer mild weather and fewer crowds, ideal for outdoor activities.
  • Safety: The road can be challenging for vehicles; walking or cycling is recommended. Be cautious, as there have been accidents involving jaunting cars in the past.
  • Local Insight: For a unique experience, consider combining your visit with a boat trip through the Lakes of Killarney, connecting the Gap with other scenic spots in the region.

Embarking on a journey through the Gap of Dunloe is like stepping into a living postcard—where every turn reveals a new vista, and the spirit of Ireland's natural beauty surrounds you.
